Stony Creek

Stony Creek flows through the inner western suburbs of Melbourne including Sunshine, Tottenham, West Footscray and Yarraville. Much of Stony Creek is highly modified and the surrounding catchment is mostly urban and industrialised. Natural reaches exist along some of the parks and reserves. The creek supports some native frog species and a number of native fish inhabit the lower estuarine reach. In addition, the creek has a number of bike paths and recreation reserves. Key risks to river health include:
- urban stormwater,
- poor instream habitat; and
- lack of streamside vegetation
Melbourne Water has developed the Index of River Condition (IRC) program to provide an overall integrated measure of the environmental condition of rivers. To find out more about the health of these rivers and creeks visit Melbourne Water’s website or request Healthy Waterways Waterwatch data.
