Education Resources

Image of school children learning about waterwaysWorking with schools is a core element of Waterwatch programs throughout Australia. Waterwatch Melbourne provides schools with a VELs-relevant education program that delivers a range of activities designed to engage students in learning and connect them to their local waterways, environment and community.

The program is exceptionally popular with both primary and secondary schools, and demand for the program frequently outstrips the ability of Waterwatch Coordinators to meet all requests.

Across the Melbourne region, including Port Phillip and Westernport catchments, Waterwatch Melbourne offers schools a variety of educational sessions with a diverse range of teaching styles.  Teachers are supported with education resources such as lesson plans, teacher training, the Waterwatch trailer and other education trailers that can be towed to the school or venue.

Waterwatch Activities

Waterwatch Coordinators have many engaging hands-on sessions and activities suitable for the classroom and will work with teachers to formulate the best possible Waterwatch program or experience for their students. Activities can be delivered as a program of sessions to build students knowledge of waterways, animals and habitats, pollution types, and their own impacts on the environment.

These activities include physical and chemical water quality testing, water bug (macroinvertebrate) surveys and habitat assessments

Waterwatch School Session

A Waterwatch school session involves a Waterwatch Melbourne Coordinator visiting a school either on the school grounds or next to a selected waterway.  Here students participate in one or all of the Waterwatch activities (listed above) to assess the health, or test the water quality of the waterway.

Interested teachers should contact their local Waterwatch Coordinator to arrange a school session.
