Monitoring & Data

Image of a creekMonitoring the health of local rivers, creeks and wetlands is an important part of Waterwatch Melbourne. Many people are involved in monitoring activities that help to keep a check on the health of our local waterways.

Waterwatch groups in the greater Melbourne region, including Port Philip and Westernport catchments, monitor the health of waterways at over 300 sites each year.

Waterwatch monitors act as the eyes (and sometimes noses) of our local communities and are often the first people to notice changes and potential problems in local waterways. This information can then be reported to local authorities who are encouraged to take action to address these issues.

Waterwatch monitors are taught how to use water testing kits to monitor the quality of local waterways. Information collected by Waterwatch monitors is particularly useful in helping to identify pollution entering our waterways. This information helps to identify what can be done at a local level to improve the health of rivers and creeks.
